Survivorman, Les Stroud: What it takes. Behind the scenes

Les Stroud, filmmaker found on OLN and the Discovery Channel US, is one of the most fascinating stories of lifestyle design through entrepreneurship. A guy who simply loved to go in the backwoods and survive found a way to make a living at it (and a quite lucrative one at that).  Stroud who was admittedly astounded by the show Survivor, decided to make some cold calls, selling his unique skillset of both a survival instructor and filmmaker.  Who could say no to a guy who claimed he could shoot the whole thing himself?

According to Survivorman.com “In the year 2000 Stroud took a few small cameras out into the wilderness of Northern Ontario, Canada and spent a week surviving alone without food, water, equipment or camera crew. He single-handedly created, produced, wrote, filmed, hosted, edited and wrote the theme music for these first two original, one-hour pilots for what would eventually become the series Survivorman. He remains the only producer in the history of television to produce an internationally broadcast series entirely written, videotaped and hosted alone.”

Les founded Survivorman Productions and created an empire.  With shows on several different TV shows, DVDs, shirts, hats, bandanas and posters Les is making some serious bank.  Les has done several shows including: “Surviving Urban Disasters” along with two versions of “A week in the Wilderness.” Both of the “Wilderness” videos are available for streaming.  Read his blog here.

“Except for footage of him arriving at his new setting, and being retrieved at the end of the week, the content of each episode is taped entirely by Stroud himself using several DV video cameras that he must carry with him everywhere that he goes. (He has lately switched to a number of HDV cameras.) The burden of having to carry, place, and retrieve the camera equipment for each shot adds to the challenge and difficulty of each survival situation. His camera and audio gear typically weigh about 50 pounds (22.7 kg) in total. During the “Behind the Scenes” episode, Stroud explains that “setting up or tearing down all of my camera gear takes about 65% of my time,” making survival more challenging. The episode also explains that Stroud and his team extensively scout their locations ahead of time and consult with survivalists and natives to the area. The goal is both to ensure Stroud’s safety and to sketch out interesting scenarios and techniques that can be illustrated on the show. He later records a voice-over commentary in the studio, where he explains his decision-making process and details of how he accomplished various tasks.” (Wikipedia)

Les however does not go forward without proper planning.  Like any good entrepreneur Les knows  what he’s getting into before he moves forward. When situations arise, Les acts quickly and uses his instinct.

I was most interested in researching the types of cameras Survivorman carries. Sony HVR-Z1Us, is his main weapon.  For night scenes, Sony DCR-HC96, and for the real HD shots a Sony HDR-HC3.

Survivorman truly embodies what it takes to do what you love, love what you do. With entrepreneurial drive and passion, combined with carefully thought out and executed plan–anything is possible! A true hero in lifestyle design.

  • Kevin Mcgeough
My name is Kevin and I'm 34 years old.
Although, I think Survivorman is a great show,
my question is about Les Stroud's musical skills.
Being a musician, and a fan of blues music
I noticed in many episodes Les plays harmonica
and guitar. I was curious to know, is Les
a self taught guitar player or did he take
lessons from a teacher. I would like to learn
how to play blues guitar the way Les does on
    Survivorman.

    Thank You.

All my family love the show, we not only enjoy watching it we take backwoods trips and use the information at hand from the show for our own survival week just for the living enjoyment, and we have learned alot more from Mr. Stroud than we ever could on Bears show, alot of things that Bear claims to do,,, is bullcrap, and with anykind of survival training at all people would know without a doubt wich show is fake,
  • Juan Dietz
Would Mr. Stroud every take some who watches his show on one of his 7 days surviving in the wilderness? I would like to learn what it takes. I'm an urban man who hasn't spent much time in the wilderness. Would that be something he would allow?
  • Derriel W. Martin
LES ; YOU ARE THE MAN !!!!
  • Roger Hamilton
I really enjoy Les and am wondering why he is calling it quits on the show. I have looked all over and find no reason given. If Bear can keep his fake show going why is les leaving us???
  • i enjoy watching survivorman every week, now thay say this is the the final one, whats coming next?
  • ceddie
    Sorry Charlie

But your just as ignorant as you dismissed the people that proclaimed that Bear Gryll is a fake. At least Les didn't have the help of a crew to help kill a wild hog and, then go back and re-edit the film a make so, that he was by himself.
  • charlie
the pathetic #$%^just now on the show poked a stick into a hornet hole and is running.you peaple are either setup properganda or real ignorant ape $%^& HA!HA!HA!HA!
  • charlie
whoever said bear gryll is a fake,i will come beat your ignorant &$$ for free!i seen a show with this pathetic survivor fella.where he climb a tree to hide from some wild hogs in a desert survival situation.bear would have showed you how to kill the hog and prepair it to eat.he shows you through example how to survive in any situation. this survivor fella mopes around in one area.allways complaining.he is a dissinformation specialist.

  • archer johnson
your show rocks. It is both informative and entertaining. It is truly a good, wholesome, fun show. PLEASE, make some new shows for 2008. I look forward to watching it.
  • BT
I can relate to the desire to make a living at something I love doing. This guy really nailed it well tho! I have seen the shows and couldnt imagine being in those situations... far more interesting to watch than Survivor, but then there is less bikini-action on Survivorman.
  • Matt Wilson
the more i think about this, its' really not important what camera he uses--its much more important to produce quality content than to worry about complex camera shots
  • Love it
It really is about doing what you love and loving what you do
  • Ontario sucks
what the hell is in ontario anyway?
  • jacob
It's not about the camera, it's about the content
  • Christopher Lucini
Positive. He's the real deal, i have a friend who works for him
  • Jen
Are you sure this show isn't fake like Bear Grylls?
  • Survivorman is truuly the man. Can't believe he didn't wait around to be discovered-- thx
