Blog: Mike has authored a well written blog on the topic of entrepreneurship, receiving 172 comments on his most recent post, asking his readers to comment and leave their New Years resolutions so Mike can keep them accountable. A perfect example of providing content for readers and encouraging participation and community around his blog. Mike learned about his readers–what they do and what their goals are, all while offering to help them along the way. Mike clearly understands the first rule of social media: you must give, to get. Provide content and useful resources and you will soon establish your expertise on the subject.

Facebook: Mike’s creation of his Toilet Paper Entrepreneur Facebook Group with over 1,500 members keeps his tribe well connected. The group allows his fans to network among themselves, bringing like-minded entrepreneurs together around his book. His assistant Scott Bradley often sends messages to the group with helpful business advice and alerts about Mike’s television appearances.

Twitter: @TPEntrepreneur with over 1,200 followers on Twitter, Mike is able to connect with people on a platform where he can announce his most recent blog posts, what’s happening with The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur and actually engage in conversation with the people he wrote his book for. The more networked Mike is the more evangelists that can spread the word about his content.

Vimeo: Mike’s Vimeo Account allows him to post all of his television appearances and other useful video content for his readers. The more places the Toilet Paper Entrepreneur is linked online the more chances for someone to find his content interesting and pass it along to friends.

The Bottom Line: Mike’s approach to social media has put him on the map, promoting his book in an entirely new way–he is everywhere online–it seems everyone is talking about him. The social web amplifies the power of word of mouth infitintely. Each person Mike connects with through social media has hundreds of friends who can easily spread the word about his teachings. Mike approaches social media the same as he would in person networking; asking the people he meets what he can do for them. The more he helps his fans, the more people will in turn spread the word across their social media profiles. His prominent profile on the social web has allowed him to book several television appearances on CNBC, speaking engagements across the country and ultimately increased book sales.

  • Mike is the 1st person I have seen really take full advantage of social media. He has shown that with a little planning and effort you can truly utilize this great resource to build a solid brand.

    I'm sure there will more examples like this in the years to come as people begin to realize how interactive and fun social media can be while building a meaningful presence.
  • Having a social media tribe around your company also gives huge opportunity for people to comment on your book on Amazon. The more people give positive reviews of the book on Amazon, the better chance of it getting purchased.

    Like Seth Godin says, he doesn't do it for the book sales--he does it to empower his tribe of people to be better marketers. With that, the profits come. You've got to give to get.
