I read this article by Pro Blogger and almost threw up in my mouth a little bit.

ZaggedEdge.com is about doing things different; being remarkable; how to not be terribly boring and create the same canned “About Me” page as everyone else in the world.

Problogger says to write your about me page with these 4 key points–I can’t say I disagree

  1. who you are…
  2. your expertise and how it addresses…
  3. their problem or goal, and how they can…
  4. contact you

“Hi, I’m Jane Smith and I write TransitionMomBlog (who Jane is) to help women make the transition from full-time mom to successful entrepreneur (the reader’s problem or goal). I started TransitionMomBlog in 2004 (Jane’s expertise – shows she has been blogging for two years) to help other women deal with the sometimes overwhelming prospect of starting a new business while still running a household (how Jane helps them overcome their problem or achieve their goal). Prior to raising my family, I spent over ten years as a teacher, corporate trainer and workshop leader (Jane’s expertise, both as a mom and a business person). To contact me, please email XXX (how to contact Jane).”

Problogger received 120 comments from this post! 99% of the comments give NO USEFUL FEEDBACK, I saw only 1 or 2 comments that disagreed with the creating a terribly boring about me page.

Your about me page defines you. Everything I know about Jane Smith is boring! I challenge all of you to give mundane tasks like writing your “about me” page, a new twist–something to set you apart, something to show you care.  Remember good is the opposite of greatVery good is very bad.

See how I defined myself here.

Post some links on any cool bio’s you see.

StumbleUpon It!

  • This is so true though. You won't stand out from the 1000's of other bloggers with an outline like that,it's a start but by no means the only outline you need. You need to be human, provide pictures, videos, quotes of what other bloggers have said about you. Do anything to set yourself apart and unique.
  • Personal branding is about being unique, you are absolutely right--set yourself apart!

There are plenty of ways to improve your about me--just come up with something interesting:
    1. Do a YouTube commercial for your personal brand
    2. include something cool about yourself like Tim Ferriss http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/ferriss-bio5.htm
    3. Create a bio in "list form"
    4. Have a bit of humor
    5. Create a personal avitar of yourself explaining who you are
    6. Create a tag cloud of all the things your all about

Nothing is worse than being at a conference, wondering who's speaking next and someone gives a canned intro that sounds like they found it on wikipedia
