Not all “Social Media Marketing” ideas a great ideas. Just because it’s a buzz word doesn’t mean you can just throw up a twitter account, a Facebook app, or start a uStream channel with success. Did your last meeting look like this:

Beware of the hype. Social media marketing takes a strong understanding of your market and it’s interaction on the social media platform. Sure your customers might use Facebook, but what do they use it for? Will your brand fit into their social networking environment?

Companies that are based around technology seem to have no problem with social media strategies. Zappos.com is all about customer service and these tech happy customers can’t get enough of their interaction on Twitter.

Nike Plus which uses a high tech device in runners shoes to track their statistics, uses their social network to connect runners. Nike could easily take advantage of a Facebook application to allow runners to post their stats on their profiles. Here, the buzz words fit; the customers find value in their social media interaction!

Well add another one to the Chronology of Brands that Got Punk’d by Social Media, Wendy’s added themselves to the “gifts” application on Facebook, so you could send a chicken sandwich. Seems as though Facebook users would rather not send their friends a virtual heart attack. Check out my newsfeed:

Hmmm… buzz word bingo wasn’t such a good idea after all. The problem is clear: fast food and Facebook aren’t exactly a match made in heaven. When you’ve got food and service that’s prone to criticism, opening up an interactive Facebook campaign isn’t the best move.

I read this article by Pro Blogger and almost threw up in my mouth a little bit.

ZaggedEdge.com is about doing things different; being remarkable; how to not be terribly boring and create the same canned “About Me” page as everyone else in the world.

Problogger says to write your about me page with these 4 key points–I can’t say I disagree

who you are…

your expertise and how it addresses…

their problem or goal, and how they can…

contact you

“Hi, I’m Jane Smith and I write TransitionMomBlog (who Jane is) to help women make the transition from full-time mom to successful entrepreneur (the reader’s problem or goal). I started TransitionMomBlog in 2004 (Jane’s expertise – shows she has been blogging for two years) to help other women deal with the sometimes overwhelming prospect of starting a new business while still running a household (how Jane helps them overcome their problem or achieve their goal). Prior to raising my family, I spent over ten years as a teacher, corporate trainer and workshop leader (Jane’s expertise, both as a mom and a business person). To contact me, please email XXX (how to contact Jane).”

Problogger received 120 comments from this post! 99% of the comments give NO USEFUL FEEDBACK, I saw only 1 or 2 comments that disagreed with the creating a terribly boring about me page.

Your about me page defines you. Everything I know about Jane Smith is boring! I challenge all of you to give mundane tasks like writing your “about me” page, a new twist–something to set you apart, something to show you care. Remember good is the opposite of great. Very good is very bad.

See how I defined myself here.

Post some links on any cool bio’s you see.

SORRY MTV, but this is being submitted to the fail blog. Why? Becuase just like most of MTV, it’s not real and it sucked. A novel idea, but they ruined the concept. How? Just take a look at this garbage:
